Recycling scheme to deliver a Christmas bonus for Somerset Charities

16th November 2010

Somerset residents who recycle their newspapers and magazines through a charity paperbank scheme are on target to raise more than £1,000 by Christmas for local community groups.

Representatives from groups supported by the Somerset Community Foundation showed their support for the charity paperbank scheme in Somerset by recycling their old newspapers at the bank located at Morrisons supermarket in Yeovil on Tuesday 16th November.

The paperbank scheme was launched in March at Tesco in Langport, and has expanded to more than 20 sites including supermarkets, retail parks, DIY stores and garden centres.

This gives residents plenty of opportunities to recycle their old newspapers, magazines and paper while popping out to their local supermarket or garden centre - and raise money for charity at the same time.
The scheme is run by Perrys Recycling and benefits the Somerset Community Foundation which funds local groups and charities in the county.

Groups supported by the Somerset Community Foundation include:

• Carry On Going (COG), supporting people recovering from mental health problems in Yeovil.
• Inside Out People offering people with head injuries and mental health issues practical work such as painting, decorating and gardening.
• Westfield Community Association was set up to create a stronger sense of community in an area to the northwest of Yeovil.
• My Life in Ilminster, which is establishing a rural skills, citizenship and life centre for young people aged 14 to 25 on the edge of society.

Justin Sargent, director of Somerset Community Foundation, said: "This scheme is a really simple way to support the Somerset Community Foundation and our efforts to sustain the work of grassroots voluntary organisations during the recession. At a time when donations and grants for many charities are falling this is a really simple way to help us support local communities without spending a penny, and you will be helping the environment at the same time."

The paperbanks are provided free to site owners and the service operates independently with no cost to taxpayers. The paper is baled at Perrys Reycling's depots in Bridgwater and Marston Magna, before being sent to the Aylesford Newsprint mill in Kent to be recycled into newsprint for newspapers.

Perrys Recycling has been working with Aylesford Newsprint for more than 10 years. Andrew Perkins, Aylesford Newsprint's head of recycling, said: "The scheme is raising important tonnage which is of good quality and it supports a UK paper mill." He wishes the scheme every success in its continuation and expansion plans.

Perrys Recycling would like to thank all the site owners and companies that have offered to host a paperbank on their property and congratulates them for their efforts in supporting their local community.
The scheme has been well received by members of the public who are using the banks in a responsible manner.
